In this recent interview with Loreena, Brian Levine calls her “one of the most original and identifiable musical voices ever to come from Canada.”
In his wide-ranging, hour-long podcast entitled Loreena McKennitt – The Explorer, Levine, who is executive director of the Toronto-based Glenn Gould Foundation, poses questions that dive to the depths of Loreena’s musical motivations, the source of her self-sufficiency and how she hopes to ‘reach’ people with her music.
Levine talks about the “first hearings” of Loreena’s music, noting how mostly young people – as far away and as culturally varied as Africa – have reported feeling “overwhelmed” upon hearing her for the first time.
Agreeing that music can certainly have universal appeal, Loreena comments, “I’ve often thought that the music industry hasn’t really understood or appreciated the exceptional medium that they’re handling and sadly has reduced so much of it down to a fashion commodity.”
Exploring the connection to her audiences, Loreena offers this: “Am I just being a technician and singing a song, or am I going across that barrier to a place which is so much closer to someone else’s soul? For me, that’s a central part of what I do.”
